This year the Marathon Association is offering the most accessible format of the project Sofia Monasteries. Everyone who wants to go through the whole or a part of the 213-kilometer long loop around the Sofia valley passing by 25 monasteries is welcome. From 07:00 am on the 13th of September until 20:00 pm on the 15th of September there will be a marked track for a free unorganized use of the route starting at any given point of it.
For those who would like to compare their results with the others there is also a competitive alternative of the project. Everything is free of charge. In order for a participant’s result to be registered they have to pick up an individual satellite receiver in the district of Boyana. All details are described at http://marathon.bg/en/sm2019/. All participants using a receiver will be traceable live at any point of the track through internet access.
This year the track is improved as this time some unpleasant parts are avoided. The terrain is diverse, it includes long mountain hikes as well as suburban areas. The track goes through mostly forest and dirt paths. The road network is about 18% of the track.
It is strongly recommended for everyone who intends to go along the track to prepare themselves well and to plan carefully their equipment, nutrition, as well as the supply of liquids and batteries. The most important thing is for the participants to have access to the electronic version of the track, which is published at http://marathon.bg/en/sm2019/ in different formats, as even the best placed markings can be missed. A very convenient option is to directly use the interactive map in Google Maps, which also shows simultaneously the track and the live location on it.
The markings will consist of temporal spray and signs. At some places there will be polyethylene bands. It is recommended for the participants to go through the track during daytime. During the night the track can be followed only with the help of portable electronic devices.
We wish everyone an unforgettable experience along the route and we are looking forward for you to share your pictures and impressions at Marathon.bg and our page on Facebook.
